God's Righteousness - What is it?

Righteousness is doing the right thing.   To be righteous must then mean to do so all the time.

The question: Doing the right thing relative to what?

Law?  Self-preservation?  Making a shoe?  Welding?  Accounting?  Anything?

Is righteousness only a moral issue?

Why distinguish?

Defining it has been a hotbed of controversy for many a long Christian time.

How are we judged in connection with our state of righteousness?

What is the measuring stick - the criteria?  Who defines it?

Who in fact defines Jehovah's righteousness?

Well He does so Himself in Malachi 3:18:

Malachi 3:18 - NKJV: Then you shall again discern Between the righteous and the wicked, Between one who serves God And one who does not serve Him.

NWT:  And you people will again certainly see [the distinction] between a righteous one and a wicked one, between one serving God and one who has not served him.

But is that measuring stick not only about the people He addresses here: the flock of Jacob Israel?

Well, God is not unrighteous to demand something of His firstborn son, His people Israel, that He was not going to do Himself, as hypocrites might.

For a start, Jehovah is a perfect example of one who impeccably does God's will - His own!

Israel was encouraged by the law to also follow His example and do exactly the same thing: God's will.

The oneness of the virtual marriage between Jehovah and Israel betokens systemic doing of the Husband's  will together.  It was entirely for her benefit, not His:

17 This is what Jehovah has said, your Repurchaser, the Holy One of Israel: “I, Jehovah, am your God, the One teaching you to benefit [yourself], the One causing you to tread in the way in which you should walk. 18 O if only you would actually pay attention to my commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea. 19 And your offspring would become just like the sand, and the descendants from your inward parts like the grains of it. One’s name would not be cut off or be annihilated from before me.”. . (Isaiah 48:17-19)  NWT *

* I used the New World Translation here, because none of the others read Jehovah AND benefit, with some LORD and benefit, one Jehovah and profit with most LORD and profit - what a mess!  - profit, though not entirely wrong, sounds ambiguous to me, but then again, I'm a foreigner.

So the upshot of this brief monologue must be then, that Jehovah God is righteous in all He does.

Even if He should lie?  Can He?  Does He?  Should He?

If God can't lie, is He still Almighty?

Some thoughts about Lying & Liars - Can God?

Here is an example of the misuse of Jehovah's grand and beautiful word relative to the Questions: Who invented the Lie?  Who invented lying?  Who invented deception?  The answer from the religious is usually: SATAN!

They frequently assert that 'It is impossible for God to lie'  They base that conviction on some out of context Bible verses like: Hebrews 6:18 and Titus 1:2.

The context of Hebrews 6:18  from verses 13-19 (a must-read) make it abundantly clear that this verse was written as an encouragement to those who have rested their hope and entire future on God's promises to Abraham and reiterated to the prophets.  Titus 1:1-3 likewise deals with that promise and eternal life in connection with which it is impossible for God to lie.

When they thus quote it is impossible for God to lie and God cannot lie, are they not in fact setting standards for God, almost dictating to Him what he can and cannot do AND making Him less than Almighty?

We can lie since we were made in the Image of the One who can: Jehovah God.

The ability to lie is natural, but lying is not.  Lying is a matter of choice.  The religious however, say that man has this ability because he is an imperfect sinner.  How come then that the covering cherub was able to lie so blatantly to Eve?  Where did he get that from?

The Cherub who became Satan lived perhaps for millions(?) of years as perfect as perfect angels go, probably without ever lying.

No one lied or deceived in the entire universe except plants and animals who practice this as a fine God-given art.

Satan is the father of the selfish lie but not lying per se.

If humans did not have the natural ability to lie they would be unable to detect and identify lies and liars for their own protection and would in fact be defenseless.

Christians frequently assert that deception is different from lies (see dictionary definition below).  They do not seem to be able to tell the difference between Jehovah's chosen moral inability to lie with regard to all of His promises and His ability to do whatever He chooses.  He certainly has the ability to lie, but always subject to His will and purpose.  They assert also that God is allowed to deceive but not lie, doing so with reference to
1 Kings 22:19-23 and other biblical examples.  That account in Kings is a good example of Jehovah allowing the use of lying to accomplish a specific purpose.

Though words are important to define thoughts and meaning, the Apostle Paul warns Christians against focusing too much on the subtleties of language in both of his letters to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:3, 4 and 2 Timothy 2:14   14 Keep reminding them of these things, charging them before God as witness, not to fight about words, a thing of no usefulness at all because it overturns those listening.

Finally now for that useful dictionary definition where lies and deception are synonyms, but understood to be quite different by JWs for their own doctrinal:
