The best way for leaders of the Church-State amalgam to control their people

was to instil paranoid fear of punishment and Demon Possession in their flocks

To that end, they altered the New Testament documentation quite dramatically to include a number of possession experiences, exorcisms, diseases and instant death penalty executions to create servile flocks in an atmosphere of angst to prosper the fear-merchant leaders.

The elders, Rabbis in Jesus' day, decried their impending future with the people and the Romans, if Jesus were to continue his ministry luring the people away and undermining their place with the governing Romans.  So they just got rid of him using the Roman state officials who, in fear of a Jewish revolt, acceded to the wishes of the Jewish leaders:

(John 11:47-48)  Consequently the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the San´he·drin together and began to say: “What are we to do, because this man performs many signs?  48 If we let him alone this way, they will all put faith in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

53 Therefore from that day on they took counsel to kill him.

Instead of the heavenly father, the first Jews anointed for heavenly governance were familiar* with under the Older Covenant where Israel experienced no demonic nonsense:

* Most were never properly taught by parents and teachers for centuries, as they ought to have been:

(Deuteronomy 6:4-9) 4 “Listen, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah. 5 And you must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your vital force. 6 And these words that I am commanding you today must prove to be on your heart; 7 and you must inculcate them in your son and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up. 8 And you must tie them as a sign upon your hand, and they must serve as a frontlet band between your eyes; 9 and you must write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

in the New Testament documentation* they were presented with a vengeful ogre who uses demon-possession experiences, exorcisms, diseases and instant death penalty execution to get His people to toe the line so that they can be true sons in His heavenly image.

* falsely named the New Testament, for it is just the attendant documentation of the actual New Covenant/Testament, written not upon perishable material, but in upon the hearts of the little flock of anointed for heavenly governance  — Luke 12:32.

These dreadful demon interactions were neither concomitant with Israel's experiences under the Old Covenant nor under their New Covenant.

Note the promise of a new covenant between Jehovah and the People Israel in Jeremiah 31:

31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,  32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them, "declares the LORD.  33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. NAS

Just to clarify LORD in Psalm 110:1:  « A Psalm of David. » The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. NAS,

Here for the original American Standard: 1  «A Psalm of David.» Jehovah saith unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.  ASV

Yes, here the Creator speaks to His only-begotten not-yet-equal angelic son.

With the new covenant in their hearts and minds, no one can ever take it upon themselves to look therein and judge them.  Only Jehovah can.

So, to ascertain that their flocks became malleable and willingly subservient, fear and guilt had to become a component part of the flock's identity mindset and the NT documentation suitably falsified to accommodate the ambitions of the now apostate leading elders.

Speculative perhaps, but likely intuitive, I take it that the infant Christian Church-State amalgam virtually affixed a final seal upon the Pax Romana throughout the Roman realm during the fourth Century.

The new testament continuing from the old and made for peace, instead of being solidly built upon the Old, became a fear-mongering Donner und Blitzen cudgel for the apostate, pharisaical Christian leaders to keep the troops servile.

Would the loving God and Father of His firstborn son Israel in a New Covenant relationship, resort to the use of demons, mindless killings and disease to judge and punish the virginal innocent Bride of Christ and sheep-like docile flock when neither standards were set for them enshrined in Law nor penalties?

The mindless apostates of the early centuries certainly wanted people to believe that and set about to make sure they did by editing and falsifying the NT narrative accordingly.

Jehovah assures us that He will NEVER do a thing unless he had revealed it first to His servants the Prophets:

7 For the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will not do a thing unless he has revealed his confidential matter to his servants the prophets*. —Amos 3:7  NWT '84

* Cross references:

(Genesis 6:13) After that God said to Noah: “The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is full of violence as a result of them; and here I am bringing them to ruin together with the earth.

(Genesis 18:17) And Jehovah said: “Am I keeping covered from Abraham what I am doing?

(1 Kings 22:23) And now here Jehovah has put a deceptive spirit into the mouth of all these prophets of yours; but Jehovah himself has spoken calamity concerning you.”

(2 Kings 3:17) for this is what Jehovah has said: “your  men will not see a wind, and you  will not see a downpour; yet that torrent valley will be filled with water, and your men will certainly drink [from it], you  and your  livestock and your  domestic animals.”’

(2 Kings 22:20) “That is why here I am gathering you to your forefathers, and you will certainly be gathered to your own graveyard in peace, and your eyes will not look upon all the calamity that I am bringing upon this place.”’” And they proceeded to bring the king the reply.

(Psalm 25:14) The intimacy with Jehovah belongs to those fearful of him, Also his covenant, to cause them to know it.

(Isaiah 42:9) “The first things—here they have come, but new things I am telling out. Before they begin to spring up, I cause you  people to hear [them].”

(Daniel 9:22) And he proceeded to impart understanding and speak with me and say: “O Daniel, now I have come forth to make you have insight with understanding.

(Daniel 11:2) And now what is truth I shall tell to you: “Look! There will yet be three kings standing up for Persia, and the fourth one will amass greater riches than all [others]. And as soon as he has become strong in his riches, he will rouse up everything against the kingdom of Greece.

(John 15:15) I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master does. But I have called you friends, because all the things I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

(Revelation 1:1) A revelation by Jesus Christ, which God gave him, to show his slaves the things that must shortly take place. And he sent forth his angel and presented [it] in signs through him to his slave John,

That applies even more so to Law and punishment!

Because Israel's laws and penalties and blessings were clearly set out so that no one could ever claim they did not know, the blessings and the maledictions awaiting Israel according to their choices are clearly documented in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy chapters 27-29.   NEEDS TO BE READ!

But there was no law in the New Covenant which was no more than a covenant of inheritance: a last will and testament.

My Goodness!  Just think of the poor couple in Acts 5:1-11 who kept a part of the receipts of a property sale meant to be a donation.

They were both executed by God!   How wickedly disgusting!

Jehovah would NEVER do nor allow His Christ to do that!   This very human couple were not under any Law nor were they told what awaited them if they held onto some of the promised money.

Then there are quite a number of demonic interactions with Jesus and other humans as in expelling, possessions, sickness and whatever other nonsense the guilt-merchants could devise.

Romans 4:15 says:  because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.  NKJV

The New Testament was no new set of laws and penalties.

It was simply a Testament where the testator, the one deciding what was to happen with his goods and chattels after his death, testifies in writing who gets what or anything.

Thus a testament is a declaration of the Testator's -the one making it, his testimony- Last Will who had to subsequently forfeit his life to validate it into effect, for until then it is just a useless piece of paper.

Here is Paul's take from the Douay based on Jerome's 4th Century Latin translation.
I have inserted the word definition numbers from the keyed-to-Strong's KJV:

15 And therefore he is the mediator of the new testament <1242> that by means of his death for the redemption of those transgressions which were under the former testament <1242>, they that are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance.  16 For where there is a testament <1242>, the death of the testator must of necessity come in.  17 For a testament <1242>, is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is as yet of no strength, whilst the testator liveth.  18 Whereupon neither was the first indeed dedicated without blood.

Definition for <1242>:

1242 διαθηκη diatheke dee-ath-ay’-kay

from 1303; TDNT-2:106,157; {See TDNT 189} n f

AV-covenant 20, testament 13; 33

1) a disposition, arrangement, of any sort, which one wishes to be valid, the last disposition which one makes of his earthly possessions after his death, a testament or will

2) a compact, a covenant, a testament

2a) God’s covenant with Noah, etc.

Jehovah arranged the original last will and testament for an inheritance with His firstborn son Israel (Exodus 4:22) as the Testator in Exodus 19:3-8.

With the testament in place, the law covenant of the household rules that applied to Israel as a whole, Jehovah's firstborn son AND wife, came later — See Exodus 24.

What is currently nomenclatured Old Testament, is about the overall account of the need to have one, what it is, who was to keep it, the acts of the people it was meant for and the mess they made of obeying it.

It seems Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy ought to cover most of what was expected of Israel, while the actual documented laws, obligations and penalties would need no more than half of one of the five books of Moses.

It is Israel's meandering in and out of God’s favour, their becoming the most sinful nation on the planet and Jehovah's way of dealing with them in the context of needing to keep all His promises to and through them that take up the bulk of the Hebrew scriptures.

Reading the first couple of chapters of Isaiah ought to put everyone in the picture.

Any talk about vengeance in the NT is the continuing Great Tribulation upon the Israel of the Exodus that began in 70 at the hand of the Romans and, by extension, the entire apostate Israel of God* Christianity who have emulated the grand harlot of Ezekiel 16 and melded with her in Revelation 18.
* Galatians 6:16.
