About Covenants – which ones?
The definition of covenant is simply an agreement that can just be a promise or a legally binding contract with or without penalties, with a variety of outcomes.
Some are bi-lateral others unilateral. A last will and testament is a bit of both, where the heir/s do not have to agree to anything or be aware of any clauses or conditions that may lead to disinheritance, but they still have to qualify.
We can make a covenant with ourselves to give up some bad habit or inappropriate behaviour.
Job made a unilateral covenant with his eyes not to look lustfully at virgins.
Jehovah made a covenant with the earth: This is what Jehovah has said, ‘If YOU people could break my covenant of the day and my covenant of the night, for day and night not to occur in their time; of the day and night, the statutes of heaven and earth (Jeremiah 33:20, 25)
Then there was the rainbow covenant between Jehovah God and all flesh in 2369 BCE where Jehovah stated that he would never again destroy all flesh by means of a flood. The rainbow was then given as an everlasting sign/symbol of that covenant.
That was unilateral. I mean, did humanity say “Yes, We’ll do it!” whatever it was, they were never asked to comply with in the first place? But it was still a covenant, an agreement of the promise genre He made all by Himself with Himself. OK?
That final covenant with Abraham was unilateral in that Abraham had to do absolutely nothing to keep what was obviously already permanently in place. It was only retrospectively bilateral in that all the evidence of Abraham's faith in previous promises was already in, from having focused sex with Sarah to killing his thus only-begotten Isaac.
1.) Abrahamic Covenant for his seed Israel (Isaiah 41:8) to become a blessing to all humanity –Genesis 22:16-16. It shall end at the end of both the 7th earth-related creative rest day and the kingdom of the 1000 years soon to commence.
a) A Testament* of inheritance mediated through Moses between Jehovah and His firstborn son Israel to inherit the promised Kingdom, inaugurated by being mutually agreed upon and validated at the death of the testator Israel in Jesus ‑Exodus 19:1-8; Hebrews 9:15; Galatians 4:4-5.
i. Law Covenant of home rules for Son and Wife Israel to obey while they cohabited with their father and husband Jehovah, celebrated in a meal shared with God where the blood of animals was spilled as they were sacrificed before they could actually be eaten. The contract was thus signed in blood, as it were, in happy celebration.
(1) Davidic Covenant – for Jesus, son of David, to inherit David's earthly throne.
Covenant for a Priest Like Melchizedek – for Jesus to empower the heavenly Christ* in his temporary office of High Priest to personally offer Jesus' blood in Jehovah's heavenly Most Holy
b) Jesus mediated a New Testament* for the Kingdom inheritance between himself and his believing Jewish disciples out of forgiven Israel. Since Jesus substituted for Jehovah's firstborn son Israel (Ex 4:22) from coming out of Egypt to his execution, the covenant he referred to in Luke 22:29 was the one Jehovah had originally made with that firstborn in Exodus 19:3-8.
* Like all testaments of inheritance with an eldest son, there was the small print of compliance with the household rules within the family home, which were clearly spelled out to Israel for their dual relationship with their Father and Husband Jehovah on the third day following their testament promise to obey. –Exodus 19:3-8; 20:1-24:18 →.
* The one offered as per John 3:16, saved by Jesus who bequeathed to the Heavenly Only Begotten all he was, had accomplished and was entitled to as prefigured by the Elijah – Elisha handover.

The assertion by some that the Old Testament is saturated with types and shadows crying out for NT antitypes is profoundly flawed.
By what Jesus, the Apostles and others made reference to in the NT, it is not all that difficult to distinguish between the genuine OT types and wishful denominational assertions.
The most important types with valid NT antitypes are:
1.The faith of Abraham;
2. Isaac and the sheep that saved him;
3. Moses, mediator and Prophet;
4. The Passover
5. The Exodus*
6. Israel: The People, Kingdom, Geography and all
8. The Temple
9. The annual Atonement sacrifices

Only today* have I finally discovered that the berith ברית diatheke διαθηκη argument, puzzling to scholar and laymen since early Christianity, never ought to have existed in the first place if the mutual agreement enacted between Jehovah and His firstborn son Israel in Exodus 19:3-8 had been rightly understood as a Last Will and Testament; the berith ברית came later.
Though initially unilateral, an heir still has to qualify to inherit the inherent promises. That is why Jehovah told Israel in Exodus 19:5-6 to obey to qualify to inherit the promises of becoming a Kingdom of Priests and a holy nation, which was eminently confirmed by the apostle to Israel in 1 Peter 2:9: But YOU are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for special possession, that YOU should declare abroad the excellencies” of the one that called YOU out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Yes, verse 5 certainly uses berith ברית Covenant, but only with reference to the household rules that were to follow.
Consistency in translation may be a virtue, as indeed it has been with the word soul, but there are many words in any language, including English, that consistently defy consistency.
One word that stands out in connection with Israel in translation is Covenant. In translating the Greek word that the Apostle Paul chose under inspiration, the translators of the NWT have sacrificed meaning on the altar of consistency. This is nowhere more obvious and critical than in the following verses, where the word covenant obscures its intended meaning of testament, which is essential to correctly understand Jehovah's purpose:
(Hebrews 9:15-17) 15 So that is why he is a mediator of a new covenant, in order that, because a death has occurred for [their] release by ransom from the transgressions under the former covenant, the ones who have been called might receive the promise of the everlasting inheritance. 16 For where there is a covenant, the death of the [human] covenanter needs to be furnished. 17 For a covenant is valid over dead [victims], since it is not in force at any time while the [human] covenanter is living.
Why does the covenanter need to die? There are all manner of covenants in human society that cover a whole spectrum of contracts from marriage to building, land acquisition to apprenticeship, where none of the participants are required to die.
Alas, there is one specific kind that actually requires the death of one of the parties to the contract or covenant, and that involves wills and testaments, where the one making the last will and testament has to die to validate it or put it into operation so that those chosen to inherit the estate, can.
Why have the JWs persisted in their (NWT) use of covenant in the above verses 16 & 17, when testament and testator are the only terms that contextually fit in with the meaning of the verses and the purpose of the covenant?
The principal reason must be their conviction that the Ransom could not have been only for Israel, since they consistently hold the belief, along with all of Christianity, that man is by default and nature imperfect, incomplete and depraved.
JWs have not consistently separated themselves sufficiently from Babylon the Great*
if they hold that view.
* the once virginal but now adulterous Bride of Christ.
The second one is that JWs believe Israel to have been completely rejected in an attempt to negate Christendom's retention of Israel in their doctrinal mindset and their nonsensical expectations for their own future so near.
Because JWs felt that other translations favoured Christendom's distorted view of Israel's destiny and their own salvation strategy, they tried to counteract what these two familiar bible versions appear to be saying:
KJV Hebrews 9:15-17 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. 16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
Now it becomes interesting, because the JW person assigned to intercept my previous communication, which the Governing Body and/or the Teaching Committee probably never got to see anyway, in his reply debunked me by insisting that all was my idea.
Is what Paul said above actually my idea? Why, thank you, but I sincerely believe that I am neither inspired nor capable of originating original ideas which might be termed my ideas.
It is my former JW associates who have their own ideas, such as inserting covenant in Hebrews 9:18: Consequently neither was the former [covenant] inaugurated without blood. ., but that is not original, since many other translation follow the same path, even though the original Greek does not contain it.
This is all based on the assumption that the Moses-mediated covenant was not a Testament.
Alas, Jehovah in his wisdom made sure that Israel was never made aware of the temporary nature of that covenant by
1. the meaning of the Hebrew word berith conveying only the intended meaning of covenant, while hiding its intended purpose as a testament. and
2. The veil Moses wore as he came off the mountain, clearly explained by Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:13: . . .that the sons of Israel might not gaze intently at the end of that which was to be done away with. Yes, Israel was not to see the end of that which had only just begun.
The Apostle Paul and other writers of the NT wrote under inspiration fully aware of Jehovah's purpose for Israel. They were highly intelligent and well versed in both Hebrew and Greek. So when they used the Greek word meaning testament in quoting from Hebrew verses containing the Hebrew word berith for covenant, they knew exactly what they were meaning to say.
And no, the mediator Moses did not have to die then, or any other time, with the annual sacrifices taking his place, as the Witnesses assert, nor did the mediator of the new covenant have to die.
Jesus in his dual role actually was the lamb that the mediator offered on Jehovah's behalf. But more about this in another place.
An inheritance is usually something that is permanent and cannot be taken away. In the human earthly realm, however, it is only temporary at best, since all humans eventually die and, in the case of the land inheritance given to Israel, it was limited in that it was meant to serve Jehovah's purpose but for a time.
In contrast, the inheritance Jehovah inherits, Israel, is permanent, even forever, as Exodus 15:17, 18 clearly indicates. It needs to be noted though, that this is with reference to the promises and not for a literal or virtual Israel to ever reside in heaven, since all those chosen to be the kingdom with loose all earthly identities as the seed of Abraham:
Galatians 3:26-29: 26 you are all, in fact, sons of God through you faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor freeman, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one [person] in union with Christ Jesus. 29 Moreover, if you belong to Christ, you are really Abraham’s seed, heirs with reference to a promise.
Due to their sin against the Law, their future was doomed, since they were condemned to death as a nation. Jesus, who as the lamb, which in the shadow of the Exodus was also Israel specific, had come into their world and had to die for that disobedient nation –to quote the inspired Ca´ia·phas from John 11:49-53:
49 But a certain one of them, Ca´ia·phas, who was high priest that year, said to them: “you do not know anything at all, 50 and you do not reason out that it is to your benefit for one man to die in behalf of the people and not for the whole nation to be destroyed.” 51 This, though, he did not say of his own originality; but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was destined to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that the children of God who are scattered about he might also gather together in one. 53 Therefore from that day on they took counsel to kill him. .
As a result, the congregation of Israel was now owned by the Christ, the rock-mass, on whom his congregation of fleshly Israel was to be built to completion in readiness for their purposed place in heaven as the Kingdom of God.
(Acts 20:28) 28 Pay attention to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the holy spirit has appointed you overseers, to shepherd the congregation of God, which he purchased with the blood M of his own [Son].

What can I add to the brilliance of Jehovah's purpose respecting Israel, as expressed in His magnificent word?
Words fail me to even remotely comprehend how the JW Leadership could miss this beautiful truth.
To really understand this, the searcher for wisdom and truth ought to first read Leviticus 26 in connection with Paul's reference that Jesus Christ had become that curse* for Israel and that the curse (Deuteronomy 27:16) was completely removed from upon Israel and Jerusalem Revelation 22:3* where John reports on that after just giving a glowing description of heavenly Jerusalem. See also Deuteronomy chapters 27-30 which culminate in the I-told-you-so song of Moses of chapter 32.

Like most Christians, Jehovah's Witnesses tend to view both as one covenant in the xrefs above (Exodus 19:5; 24:7), whereas the first one was not so much a covenant than a testament, for Jehovah's firstborn son Israel to become a Kingdom of Priests and Holy Nation, whereas the subsequent Law covenant inaugurated in Exodus 24 were the behavioral standards required for the son to remain the heir as well as the home rules for Israel the wife of Jehovah.
This was the first Testamental Kingdom covenant for an inheritance Jehovah had organized for His firstborn son to become the kingdom if they qualify:
6 And you yourselves will become to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to say to the sons of Israel.” (Exodus 19:6),
That exclusive assignment for the duration of the 70-week prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27 ended when the first Gentile Cornelius (Acts chapter 10) was invited to become a part of that Holy Nation.
That covenant of Exodus 19: 3-8, however, did not end with that Gentile's inclusion, but the exclusivity of access for natural Israelites did, whereas the covenant itself will terminate only when all of by God chosen 1400000 multiethnic members of God's Kingdom Government are finally seated in governance to continue on to he end of the seventh day of Creation, God's exclusively earth-related rest day, when Jehovah inherits everything it has accomplished.
However, the Law of Exodus 24 and beyond as a means to attain eternal live for its members already ended when John the Baptist began his ministry while the complete end of the law covenant terminated at the death of their Messiah in whose body the nation itself ceased to exist as a people of God when she experienced the death of an adulterous wife and an atonement for the firstborn son of God, while granting the people another 31/2 years exclusive access to the promises.
It would be pointless to retain a law and constitution exclusively provided for a nation that no longer exists. –Matthew 11:12-13; Ezekiel 16
8 “‘And I came passing along by you and got to see you, and, look! your time was the time for love’s expressions. So I proceeded to spread my skirt over you and to cover your nudeness and to make a sworn statement to you and enter into a covenant with you*,’ is the utterance of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘and so you became mine. 9 Furthermore, I washed you with water and rinsed away your blood from off you and greased you with oil. 10 And I went on to clothe you with an embroidered garment and to shoe you with sealskin and to wrap you in fine linen and to cover you with costly material. 11 And I went on to deck you with ornaments and to put bracelets upon your hands and a necklace about your throat. 12 Furthermore, I put a nose ring in your nostril and earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 And you kept decking yourself with gold and silver, and your attire was fine linen and costly material and an embroidered garment. Fine flour and honey and oil were what you ate, and you grew to be very, very pretty, and gradually you became fit for royal position*.’”. (Ezekiel 16:8-13)
* God's Law Covenant which were the rules of the husband's family the young wife had to submit to from now on.

Ezekiel goes on to say in this chapter how she soon became a prostitute, so much so that instead of receiving payment for sexual favours rendered, she actually paid her lovers. There is, however, a final atonement provided by Jehovah through the Lamb that first of all takes away the sins and transgressions of Israel and then aliases as Israel's 2nd Passover Lamb.
