To Be or Not to Be born again
In John 3:1-21 Jesus, Israel's Christ, launches the concept of being born again during a conversation with Nicodemus, Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin.
The report or account of this, however, reached the scattered rudderless Christian community only in the dawn of the second Century.
The idea of having to be born again to enter the Kingdom they were given to become by Jehovah, coupled with John’s reminder in chapter 6 that the Jews will need to eat Jesus' flesh and drink his blood for them to attain to that Kingdom and attendant everlasting-life/immortality was a concomitant part of the Good News of that Kingdom that would only have made sense exclusively to the Jewish and proselyte disciples in the context of their OT understanding.
They knew that the Law contracted with them at Mt. Sinai was one of temporary servitude in the Manner of Hagar (Galatians 4:22-26). It was not everlasting even as Hagar was not. It was therefore very much a Testament in that the testator Israel, Jehovah's firstborn son, had to die for another to inherit all they had accomplished, sins against the law and attendant consequences.
Earthly Jerusalem actually became a symbol of how that defined not only Jehovah's equally temporary rule over the nation, but also Israel's short life as testator:
15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. 16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. ––Hebrews 9:15-17 AV
How was Israel to die? As the adulterous wife of God: death in execution.
As the firstborn son of God: loss of inheritance in the common death of a testator.
The overture was played out for them by Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian Army in 607 BCE*.
* or whatever date the religious authorities have imposed upon this watershed event; I don’t really care. It's a complete waste of time, like arguing about the Trinity. As Jesus said: wisdom is proved righteous by what it accomplishes. Just one look at Christianity's killing fields of history should suffice to demonstrate their complete lack.
From that time they remained on death row, as it were, until Messiah, in whom they
then suffered executional death, with the final nail in the coffin of their demise
hammered in by the Roman armies in 70 AD when the entire structure and belief system
of their world* and what was left of any positives in their relationship with their
God and father Jehovah were wiped out.

That death of Israel IN HIM*, removed all their sins of transgressing the body of Law of the first covenant as rightly pointed out by the Apostle Paul in Romans 6:7:
For he that is dead is freed from sin. AV
For he who has died has been acquitted from [his]* sin. NWT '84
* Emphasis only. No Trinitarian allusions.
* Doctrinal insert by believers in the unscripturally fabricated false doctrine of inherited sin.
After their Messiah sheep Jesus had died in atonement for the nation/people Israel:
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; 52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered* abroad.
* From the Diaspora
Ezekiel 16:63: 63 Then, when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign LORD.’" NIV
Romans 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. AV

all of their sins/transgressions against their law covenant were forgiven for a clean start, while only those with a faith like Abraham's, believing and accepting this realignment, were accepted by Jehovah into the new covenant made with that same Israel of God formerly in the older Mt. Sinai covenant of servitude –Jeremiah 31:31.
Only a little flock of Jews and Gentile proselytes ultimately manifested themselves chosen out of the many called to be given the Kingdom By God —Luke 12:32.
The firstborn son of God Israel were born the first time at the Exodus Exodus 4:22.
Their death in Jesus, having acquitted them of all sin,* gave them a new start with a clean slate as they were born again out of Egypt in Jesus, to fulfil all the promises riding upon them as the Seed of Abraham —Isaiah 41:8. Please see here.
The reason for their existence in the heavenly kingdom is, of course, to facilitate restoring the original assignment of Genesis 1:26-28 to all humans who ever lived, live and yet shall, because that was and continues to be Jehovah's eternal purpose.
The only ones who can legitimately claim to be born again are those of this little flock of the Christian (anointed) Israel of God constituting the Heavenly Kingdom of God.
